Adding Photos to your Blog Posts Might Seem Basic…
Blogging is a whole thing, and if you’re here… you probably already know it’s essential to consistent business growth online. (Don’t you love when I write sentences like that, that sound all official?) It’s kind of old-school, I’ll admit. It feels a lot more engaging and fun to make video content, and then await your big viral moment… but you don’t want like, momentary growth, do you? You want a business with legs. One that stands on its own.
And blogging is a huge part of getting there, at least if you want stability in your rise through the search engine ranks. (Yes, even in the age of AI results and AI search!!)
A Photo is Worth a Thousand Words!
When it comes to blogging though, it’s not just about what you WRITE, it’s about everything that goes into those posts! And that includes photos. Photos are worth a thousand words, and although it’s cliché… all those imaginary words? They do WORK for you when you’re blogging for your business! From the ones that aren’t really there, to the ones that ARE, through things like alt-tagging your photos.
Photos are Great For SEO!
The first thing we’ve gotta talk about in this arena, is how great photos are for SEO. It’s the most logistical, measurable part of this list, because let’s face it: ranking, and SEO, is a numbers game. It’s about getting in front of the right people. And that means the more Google knows about your pages, the better. Photos have a place in that process! Now if you’re a photographer, you’re probably used to putting images into your blog posts, kind of the same way I do in THESE posts. Showcasing your work, highlighting the session type you’re talking about… and that’s amazing. But are you adding alt-tags to those images, to make sure they’re doing work for you? We can go over in detail how to effectively alt-tag at another time, but for now, you should know, alt-tags were originally an accessibility feature (and still are!) but now they’re ALSO used by Google, to learn more about the page the image is on. So adding images to your blog posts, and alt-tagging them effectively, can only help!!
Connecting with Your People is VISUAL
Beyond SEO contributions of photos in blog posts, we’ve got the whole aspect of “connection” to talk about. These are, being honest with you, waaaaay more subjective elements. It’s less measurable, and it’s less straightforward to calculate something like an ROI on adding images to your blog posts. But with all that being said, it comes down to humanity.
We’re really visual creatures. We judge the world around us visually a huge percentage of the time, and it contributes massively to the way we make decisions. It’s also a big contributor to how well we connect to media – that’s why video, AKA moving pictures, is the highest converting type of media we can use online. It’s like photos, on steroids! But seeing as it would be kind of impossible to add video to all of your blog posts (I mean that’s basically Instagram, right? And we already have that!!) photos are the next best way to create that connection. So add photos to your blog posts that are going to appeal to your ideal clients, whether you’re a creative business owner, or not!
Photos can Turn your Posts into Touchpoints
Technically speaking, blog posts are pretty much always touchpoints for your audience. Whether they’re teaching them something, or showing them what you do – even giving them a behind the scenes look at something in your work. You’re creating touchpoints with your content, that let your future and prospective clients know that you’re the person they totally want to work with, because you’re a badass!
But photos bring that touchpoint to a new level. If you’re a realtor and you’ve put images of homes your clients could purchase into your blog post… they get to flip through, and imagine themselves, in that livingroom! If you’re a yoga teacher, and you add images of classes in your studio… same thing! Those potential students get to imagine themselves in your studio, going through a gentle yoga flow, guided by you, their new favorite yogi. These touchpoints are powerful, and while your future clients might still be able to place themselves in the scenario from your writing itself… you’re not an author. (I guess if you ARE an author… maybe skip this part.) It’s not your job to paint immersive pictures with words. So instead, paint pictures… with pictures!!
