Question: Can’t I just use AI for senior pictures?

Answer: While it’s tempting to use AI for senior pictures, I’d recommend taking the time to have a real photo session. Not just because photography is important, but because you deserve to not only celebrate this milestone, but to be able to look back at the REAL you after you graduate!

Senior Pictures might feel kind of old school

In 2026 it might feel like booking a senior picture session to celebrate your graduation (or your kiddo’s graduation!) is kind of old school (cliché much?). When I used to talk about this concept, it was mostly because let’s face it, you take selfies. You have a camera in your pocket all the time. You intentionally document your life, yourself. So the question was pretty much “why take senior pictures when you already take all kinds of photos every day”.

But now the question is a little different, because not only do we have cameras in our pockets, we can GENERATE photos with a click and a sentence. Which might make it feel even LESS important to book professional photography for these kinds of milestones! And I totally get that. But we’re going to talk about why that’s just an illusion, and actually… if you rely on AI for senior pictures, you’re doing your future self a disservice!

When you can generate whatever set you want… why does photography matter?

Ultimately, whether we’re talking about senior pictures or other types of photo session you can schedule professionally, this conversation boils down to one thing. When you can generate whatever set you want for a photo, why does professionally booked photography matter? I’m not saying it’s a bad thing or passing moral judgment if you’re someone who likes generating images of themselves or their loved ones (with permission) in different locations, both real and imaginary. It’s true that five years ago, if you wanted a photo of yourself in a specific set, you had to go somewhere that set was. Or, you had to learn Photoshop, or hire someone whose job it was to create composite images.

Now, we’re in a different world. With just a few clicks, you can take a photo that you’ve snapped on your phone, and put your kiddo in the middle of the forest in formalwear, or in a scene from their favorite film, or… on the moon. The whole world is your oyster, and it can all happen on your phone or your computer. But that simple fact – the fact that the whole process happens on your phone – is a big part of what makes professional photography still incredibly valuable in this day and age. And not only that, but potentially even MORE important. So today we’re walking through the WHY that’s the case, and some of the things you might not think about when you’re choosing how to handle senior pictures this year!

Photo sessions are a celebration

The first thing I want to highlight here, is that a real photo session is a celebration. Whether you’re celebrating graduation and all of the things that you’ve accomplished throughout your time in high school or college, or you’re celebrating a new addition to your family and all the ways your family has changed. Maybe you’re just celebrating being who you are – and that’s cool too! But at the core of taking photos, is celebration of the people in your life and what makes them so awesome.

But “celebration” isn’t something you do alone at your computer. Well… it can be, but that’s only one kind of celebration and you need more than that in your life! There’s a big difference between marking an occasion or a milestone by sitting down at your desk and generating a photo, and marking it by going to a photography studio, and creating art!

Real photography comes with memories

I do what I do, because photography for me is about connection. And when you use an algorithm to make that happen – well… the “connection” isn’t there. The artistic eye isn’t there. And the focus on you being yourself – or your senior being themselves – isn’t there either. Senior portraits are a memory that you and your kiddo will be able to look back at for years to come, and it SHOULD come with memories of spending time together, posing together, laughing, smiling – not pointing your phone at them and letting an algorithm do the rest.

The celebration of your accomplishments, when you book senior photos, isn’t just about the photos. It’s about the experience. It’s about taking valuable time out of your week to devote to saying “Hey, I did this thing, and it’s super cool”. And that effect? Well, you can’t have it, unless you build the senior photo experience as what it is – an experience. Not a prompted process sitting at your desk.

You’ll get to look back at the REAL you

I could go on about this forever, but today we’re going to close on the most important aspect of senior pictures, for me at least. As we’ve talked about recently when it comes to other types of photo sessions, like Branding & Headshot sessions – no matter what, when you generate a photo using AI, that photo? It’s not REAL. It might sound a little harsh, since you’ve given it a photo of you (or in this case, your senior) to start with, and THAT might be real – but what it outputs… even if it’s a perfect representation, even if it looks EXACTLY like you or them… it’s not real. It didn’t happen. You weren’t there. THEY weren’t there. It might not seem like a big deal now – but in 20 years? When you’re looking back at those photos of your teen, you deserve to be able to see who they REALLY were. Your ACTUAL child. Or if you’re reading this as a high school or college senior, you deserve to be able to look back at who YOU really were. Not a processed representation of who you were, not one with your freckles in the wrong places, not one where you’ve been almost imperceptibly changed by the beauty standards that have fed these algorithms over time. You. Authentically.

So sure – you can generate that fun silly picture of you at the top of Everest, for giggles. But real, celebratory images, from moments that can’t be returned to? You deserve for those to be REAL.
