Why Shouldn’t I Use AI For My Headshot? | Minneapolis Headshot Photography

Question: Can’t I just use AI to create my headshots?

Answer: AI is a great solution for some things in your business, but it’s not a replacement for visual communication with your customer base. Using AI to create headshots and other images sends the wrong message to potential customers!

AI Headshot Solutions are Tempting

As we get deeper and deeper into 2026, you’ll have noticed something I’ve also noticed. And if you’re here reading this, you’ve already guessed that thing is “AI tools are everywhere, and they’re so easy to use”. I get it, I really do – Gemini can do all kinds of things, and Claude can do all kinds of other things, and MidJourney exists. You can get AI credits to do all kinds of tasks in all kinds of areas, and if you’re a business owner, you’re probably keeping up with all the things AI can do, because of course you are – you’re trying to keep costs down, because… well, who isn’t?

But today I’m here to tell you why AI isn’t the solution for your headshots, whether they’re for business, or for things like your dating profiles. And I promise, the reasons are GOOD REASONS. I know I’m a photographer, and it technically benefits me to tell you AI isn’t where it’s at – but more than anything else, I want you to be successful. And it was actually helpful to use AI for your headshots, I would say so. I promise.

We all like when things take less time (and money)!

I’m the first person to keep a close eye on where I can save money and run my business efficiently, because I like having the funds to put where they’ll really count. If I’m wasting money in one area, then I’m losing out on growth in another, so I’m constantly evaluating, and making sure what I’m investing in for my business is the right place to be committing. So if I wasn’t a photographer, and I was… let’s say a realtor, as an example, I might consider using AI to create headshots for my website, and to generate images for my social media. Especially if it meant that I could save money that could be used for other things, like ads, or hiring out content posting.

So I completely understand the impulse to use these platforms. It’s not just that they’re shiny and new and fun – it’s that they look like time savers, and money savers.

AI headshots aren’t the solution though, they’re the start of more problems

But when you get past the surface level, where these AI platforms look like they’re a great way to save time and money, and actually evaluate WHY you’re supposed to have images of yourself on your presence… it becomes really clear why artificial intelligence can’t fit the bill. So we’re going to get into the nitty gritty, about both headshots for business, AND headshots for things like Hinge. Because in either situation, you should be using real photos. Again, I’m not saying that because I’m a photographer – I’m saying it because I wish you all the success in the world!

1 – Your headshot represents you

To kick us off, answer a quick question for me. Why do you need a headshot? Not like, the surface level, that you need it for your website, or for a social profile. That part is easy – I mean WHY do you need a headshot for either of those places? Ultimately, at the core of all of the reasons for including headshots anywhere, it’s because you’re building connection.

If you’re using the headshot for business purposes, whether that’s on your website, on social media, or in an ad – you’re including a photo of you so that people can connect with it. They can see who you are, pick up clues from the face you’re making, and the way the photo is framed, and the way you’re dressed, and the props included (or not included) to get hints about who you are, and whether they’d enjoy working with you.

On social profiles, and dating profiles, the reason is the same. Those photos are for connection. They’re how people judge the book by its cover – the book, in this case, being YOU. Those photos are the first things people see about you, and so naturally you want to look your best.

But because these uses of headshots are meant for people to connect to you, and to get a feel for who you are, using something that isn’t actually a picture of you, in real life, being yourself? It completely undermines the point.

2 – More and more, people are looking for authenticity

Connected to the above point about connection (does that count as a pun?), while it’s true that these AI tools are getting more and more popular, that comes with a flip side to the coin. More and more, authenticity is the name of the game. Just like we’ve talked about when it comes to using AI for your product photos, using AI for your headshots takes the authenticity away from the content you’re posting. And if we’re talking about your dating profile… same deal. Using AI generated photos means the people who are scrolling through your profiles aren’t seeing YOU, they’re seeing a generated, or modified version.

The person they meet when they come into your office for your meeting, or join you in a restaurant for dinner, isn’t the person they saw on your profile or your website, and that matters, massively. When you work with a photographer for headshots that you’re putting any of those places, you know you’re going to come away with photos that are REAL, and that ALSO show you at your best. When you use AI, you’re actually compromising, because while it might feel like those photos show you “at your best”, using them sends a message. On your dating profile, that message is “I’m not happy showing you my real self”. And that’s counter to the point, right? If you’re there to find someone to spend your time with?

If you’re using them for business, the message it sends is “I’m happy with cutting corners,” and that’s not great either.

3 – AI Doesn’t Actually Hit The Mark (Yet)

Of course, this would also be a different conversation if people couldn’t tell that the photos you were using were generated – if they were indistinguishable from real photography, and they could show you as you are, with all your flaws… sure. Things might be different. But it can’t.

There is no way around the fact that AI generated photos WILL be noticed by the people looking at your content. Which means that lack of connection, the lack of authenticity, the various messages it sends – those can’t be avoided if you’re using AI to generate headshot photos. So it isn’t even a situation where you can make them work in the meantime, before replacing the photos with something real. And if that IS your situation, I understand. And I understand why it feels like AI is the solution. However, I would recommend something that might sound radical coming from a photographer.

Use your phone. No really – take a selfie. If you aren’t in a place where you can work with a photographer, then take a photo, or a few photos, yourself, and use those. Not enhanced via AI, not with filters – a real photo. Because that’s going to do more work for you from a connection and authenticity standpoint than any AI generated photo (as of now) will!
