Ten Reasons to have a Boudoir Photoshoot

Boudoir Photo Sessions can be NERVE WRECKING

And getting naked in front of the camera isn’t everyone’s cup of tea!

We’re living in the age of Instagram models and influencer culture. Getting in front of the camera in general is nerve wrecking, let alone… getting in front of it naked. It would absolutely make sense if the idea of stripping down in photography studio makes you cringe a little bit. (I’m really sellin’ it to ya, huh? I promise this gets more positive!!) Here’s the thing. Despite that little cringe? There are a MILLION REASONS to have a boudoir session, that completely outweigh the nerves. I don’t have time to list a million exactly, but I figured starting with the top ten reasons you should have a boudoir photoshoot wouldn’t hurt!

Ten Reasons to say YES to a Boudoir Photo Shoot

1. Boudoir isn’t about an amount (or rather lack) of clothing, it’s an attitude.

The most common question I get about boudoir sessions isn’t about my packages, or or my pricing. It’s about whether or not you have to get naked during your session! And the answer, is absolutely not. You do not have to get naked for your boudoir session. The power of this type of photography isn’t about showing off your body (although that part can be pretty cool). The actual power of a boudoir session comes from the attitude you bring to it. And that attitude? It’s a pretty great feeling.

2. Our bodies are badass, and deserve to be celebrated.

Let’s take a moment to step off the body positivity train. I promise we’ll get back on, but… I want you to think about the self-talk you have in your mind about your body. How much of that self-talk is positive? How much is empowering? Normally, the answer is not a lot. Not a lot of positive mental self-talk, and not a lot of empowering self-talk. If that’s you… it’s okay. You’re not alone. But the thing is, your body? The one you think about in a pretty negative light? It’s badass as hell. That body has done SO MANY THINGS. It’s gotten you here. That in and of itself is worth celebrating.

3. They make pretty fabulous gifts for romantic partners.

This wouldn’t be a thorough list, if I didn’t mention what a spectacular gift boudoir pictures make for partners! Girlfriends, boyfriends, husbands, wives – and everyone in between (probably keep it to those you’re romantic with, but I dunno, you do you boo.) After your session, you’ve got a whole list of options for products and prints you can order! Whether you’re going for something subtle like a folio of prints they can flip through when the mood strikes, or something *less* subtle like a three foot wide print to put over your bed… we can make it happen.

4. Treating yourself to “me time” has super positive mental-health impacts.

We’re all multi-faceted humans. We’re parents, partners, employees and employers, personal chefs for tiny tyrants, housekeepers… the list goes on and on. And most of that time? Most of the time you’re being a parent and a partner and a human with a job? You’re not spending that time on you. But taking care of you is the most important job we’ve got. It’s what keeps us mentally clear. It’s what helps us do all of those other things! The cliché about not being able to pour from an empty cup is real, y’all. And the positive mental health impact of spending time being pampered and empowered can’t be ignored!

5. If you don’t want to share them with anyone, you don’t have to.

Sure, boudoir photos make a great gift. ANY photos make a great gift. But that gift doesn’t have to be for someone else!! That gift can be for you. You can keep them all to yourself, if you want to. There’s no reason to share if that’s not your vibe! These can be all for you, to look back on ten years from now, if that’s what you want them to be.

6. Working with a professional photographer is about as close as you can get to seeing yourself the way other people see you.

Look, we all know selfies are deceptive. And mirrors are deceptive. Just a slight shift in angle and the way we see ourselves is MASSIVELY distorted! But when you’re working with a professional photographer, it’s a lot easier to create images that reflect what we really look like in the world. And seeing yourself that way? It can be a pretty powerful experience, that changes the way you see yourself day-to-day. It re-emphasizes characteristics of yourself you might have never noticed otherwise.

7. Body-positive choices have a cumulative effect.

Body positivity isn’t something you get to choose once, and then forget! It’s a cumulative activity that literally changes the way your brain works. Reflect enough times on the positive side of your own appearance and uniqueness… and eventually, those individual choices will change the way you think on autopilot! Slowly (I won’t pretend it’s easy, I personally deal with this in my own life) over time, your attention will shift. Instead of seeing the negative in the mirror, you’ll gravitate to the positive. And a professional boudoir photoshoot can help massively with that!! Partially because (as I’ve mentioned already) you’ll be able to literally see yourself through someone else’s lens. But also… because the whole thing is an experience. And you deserve that experience.

8. It’s a magical way to celebrate a milestone.

If you’re someone who likes a good excuse to do something fun… I’ve got you! Turning 50? Boudoir session. Kiddo just turned 1? Congrats mama, your body DID ALL THAT: celebrate with boudoir. Breastfeeding and want to remember it? That, believe it or not, also falls into boudoir. Got engaged? Boudoir. Photo. Shoot. You’re getting the point here, right?

9. Boudoir photography can help shift your focus away from your flaws.

I know I keep coming back to the whole “body positivity is a choice we make every day” vibe here, but that’s because it’s true! When you see yourself through the eyes of a pro photographer, you’ll get to see the emphasis we put on different elements of… well, you. I don’t mean that in a sexualized kind of way, either. I just mean that everyone is absolutely gorgeous, and deserves to see themselves that way. And those curves you see as a flaw in the mirror? I promise you’ll see them differently through my camera, babe. And once you’ve seen it… there’s no going back.

10. When we get out of our comfort zone… we grow. (I know, it’s cliché, but I can’t not include it!!)

Finally, this list wouldn’t be complete without coming full circle back to those nerves we started off talking about!! It’s okay to be nervous. And it’s okay to feel uncomfortable. But getting out of our comfort zone is how we grow! And we can’t know whether we enjoy something, until we try it. Who knows – maybe you’ll be a pro, from the moment I start snapping pictures!! No way of knowing, until we try.
